The Lie

“Pain may be the medicine that saves another pain.”

This is an interview about my friend Wang. He once fell into depression due to work for a period of time, and his coping method was to drink alcohol to relieve the symptoms. The theme of the interview is his feelings about that period, while the theme of the video is the meaning of desire to people. Drinking, as one of his desires, hurt him but also helped him ease his pain.

The project is named after a rock song created by a Chinese rock band called "草东没有派对" (Cao Dong). The song, titled "Lie" in English and "床" (Chuang) in Chinese, describes the hidden agony behind those who pretend to be happy on the surface. By day, they feign everything is fine to others, yet at night, they struggle to deceive themselves while lying in bed.

During the period when Wang was most afflicted by work pressure, he often worked overtime until 11 p.m., then went to the bar to drink until 3 a.m., only to return to work at 7 a.m. I, along with other concerned friends, occasionally glimpsed his depressive mood stemming from immense stress. This manifested in late-night tearful phone calls or even self-inflicted cuts on his skin. Yet, whenever we reached out to him, he would often reassure us that he was fine. Just like the lyrics depict, "Searching carefully for every scar, yet still having to lie."

Six months later, Wang resigned from his previous company and secured a new job. Though he no longer needed to work late into the night, he still enjoyed drinking.

In his words, "Alcohol makes me feel alive."

Looking at the light outside the window

Can't tell if it's a street light or the sun

Searching his body carefully trying to find a reasonable injury

But you still have to lie .

--No Party for Cao Dong  Lie

看着窗外的光

分不清是路灯还是太阳

仔细搜索着自己的身体试着找出一道合理的伤

却还是得说谎。
